The National Do Not Call List is going to be working in Canada soon. Finally!! It’s about time. I can’t wait. We get so many telemarketers at my house now. They disturb dinner, relaxation, watching TV, and sleep. And I absolutely hate having my sleep disturbed by some person that can’t speak English asking me if I need my ducts cleaned. I live in an apartment building, I have no fucking ducts!

It starts on Sept. 30, 2008. Click here to visit the site.

It will work by calling a 1-800 number or visiting their site and registering. You can use it for landline numbers, fax machine numbers, and even mobile numbers. The number you register expires after 3 years, which means you’ll need to re-register again, which kind of sucks.

Politicians, charities, and newspaper selling is still allowed, as well as opinion and research  firms. You will also be able to register complaints through this site and phone number. I’m betting I’ll have a few even with my number on this list.

Movie Review Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo BayI loved the first one, and had fairly high expectations for this one.

This one continues with the crazy antics of Harold and Kumar smoking weed, and getting into trouble where you really shouldn’t be getting in trouble. A lot of exaggeration and silliness, but it works with these movies for some reason. I’m not sure why, because the plot is pretty lame.

So overall there were some funny parts in the movie, but it wasn’t as good as the first, that’s for sure.

I did love the Neil Patrick Harris cameo again! He’s really aged a lot, and it shows in this movie. He’s so crazy though haha. It’s too bad he couldn’t have been as crazy back when he was popular. It would have made him more fun. He kind of reminds me of Justin Timberlake for some reason…

So I didn’t buy the first one on DVD, and I won’t be buying this one either.

Movie Review SleepwalkingThis movie is about a woman who abandons her child, and leaves her brother to take care of the young girl. He ends up losing her to Social Services, after he is told he is not able to properly take care of the girl. He ends up kidnapping her from foster care, and they go to his father’s farm house, where they are not treated so well.

It’s a really sad, and cold movie. Cold would be the best word to describe this movie. Harsh would be another. It’s in the prairies during the winter, and everything about the movie just feels so bitterly cold. From the acting, to the lives they live, to the scenes.

You feel so bad for the young girl, but eventually the movie starts to drag, and the plot feels like it’s going nowhere. It became predictable, and in the end, felt like a bit of a letdown.

I had higher hopes for this movie from the trailer, but ultimately it was not that great. I definitely will not be buying this for my DVD collection.

July 27th, 2008Penelope

PenelopeAnother movie review… I’ve been catching up on movies that I’ve been meaning to watch.

This was a really cute movie. Better than I expected actually. It’s not brilliant or anything, but totally worth watching if you like romantic comedies.

The movie is about a girl who was born with a curse. The curse is that she has the nose of a pig. Yes, a snout! So her parents keep her a secret in the house for years, until she is an adult. One day she decides to get out of the house and see the city after many failed matchmakings by her parents.

Christina Ricci plays Penelope, and is really great as usual. Also she makes a friend who is played by Reese Witherspoon; who also produced the movie, but I felt could have had more of a role in the movie.

The ending was nice and didn’t feel rushed, but it did feel like something was missing, although I’m not sure what.

All in all though, I enjoyed it, but I won’t be buying it, it wasn’t that good. Most romantic comedies aren’t though, are they? They’re kind of disposable movies really.

July 25th, 2008The Ruins

The Ruins

After hearing how bad this movie was, and going in watching it with fairly low expectations, I was actually surprised that it wasn’t that bad at all. I’ve seen far worse horror movies in my life. I think the reason people were disappointed is because they were expecting something completely different from what they got. I think what makes so many movies so bad is that people go into them with expectations. It’s best to just let the movie take you where it wants and go with the flow when watching a movie.

It’s actually a pretty disturbing movie really. The characters have to go through many tests of courage and stuff that most people never have to face in their lives. The acting wasn’t that great, but that’s pretty typical of a horror movie. Lots of screaming, which was done pretty well I suppose. The effects were pretty gruesome and gross. A couple of cute guys as well didn’t hurt this one. The ending was sort of weak though. You’d have to watch it to see what I mean.

Overall, it’s best to watch this one with either low or no expectations at all, and just follow the story along. It’s not confusing, but it is a bit hard to watch due to how psychologically messed up it is.

July 23rd, 2008Cereal Freakout

cereal freakoutWhile I was in the grocery store yesterday picking up a few things, I was chatting on the phone with a friend. I was in the cereal aisle talking about our favourite cereals. He mentioned his favourite cereal is Count Chocula. I mentioned that it’s too bad he can’t try my favourite cereal, Cocoa Krispies. It’s a USA only cereal you see. We used to have it in Canada when I was a kid, which is how I learned how great it is. Then I got a box of it in Pittsburgh back in 2001, and then an online friend sent me a box last Fall.

While I was expressing my disappointment I literally glanced at the Rice Krispies in front of me and noticed the word Cocoa on the box. I had to stop and look again for a couple of seconds to really make sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing. Oh my god! They’re back! They’re called Rice Krispies Cocoa. I had a bowl this morning. So freakin good. I’m so glad it’s back, and I hope it’s not temporary this time. I could live on the stuff! Maybe I should stockpile it just incase it disappears again… although at $4.99 a box, that could be pricey.

July 18th, 2008Diary of the Dead

Diary Of The DeadI had fairly low expectations of this movie. I find George A. Romero’s movies are pretty crappy. He’s supposed to be the original zombie movie maker, and the best at it. Yet, he consistently makes the worst zombie movies. This was just a continuation of that trend.

First of all it was filmed with hand cameras. Garbage! I hate that shit. Use real cameras, so that you don’t give the viewers headaches and nausea. Second, get people who can actually act. Instead of getting 7 people who can’t act, get 3 who can, and give them more money. That would be a good start.

The best part of the movie is the zombies. The make up artists and effects artists really do a great job for this movie. They do look pretty creepy.

I just hate when big names do low budget!

The new Radiohead video for House of Cards is now available to watch online. Very cool video, that used no cameras to create it. They used this laser machine that reminds me of a radar. It really does make sense in this age of data, where everything in life is technology and data. Check it out:

There is also the ”making of” video:

You can also go here to remix the video and create your own visualizations.

July 8th, 2008Funny Games

Funny GamesWhen I started watching this I was not 100% sure what to expect. I like watching movies like that, because the fun of watching a movie is not knowing what’s going to happen. I was expecting a family taken hostage by two crazy psychos, and probably one of them or all of them would survive, and the psychos would get caught and you’d have your happy or not-so-happy ending. Fortunately, or unfortunately, that was not how things went! I say this, because I’m not sure if I liked this movie or not.

July 7th, 2008Zune

Well I received my Zune from Matchstick. If you want to get one for free like I did, click here.

In the package was an 8 GB Zune with headphones and 3 colours for the headphones. Pink, orange, and black. The Zune itself is black. There was also an AC charger. Personally I can’t believe the Zune only comes with USB attachment for charging. I prefer to charge through my AC charger because it’s faster I find. Also came with the premium headphones which are really cool, but any time you touch the wires you can hear it through the headphones while listening to music. They are too sensitive apparently. They’re fabric covered instead of rubber, which might be why, I’m not sure.

Zune Kit

As for the product… I’m disappointed. I’ve been waiting so long for Zune to come to Canada. First of all 8 GB is not enough for me, which is not Zune’s fault, as they do have an 80 GB model available. The promotion however only had 8 GB models. The screen is far too small for my liking, which again is because the model size. The 80 GB model has a much larger screen.

  Zune Headphones Zune

Zune AC Charger & Premium Headphones

The worst part of the Zune is not the product itself, it’s the software for updating it and listening to music on your computer. It lacks a lot compared to iTunes. It has no system tray icon, so when you minimize it, it goes to your taskbar, taking up valuable real estate there. It is very memory intensive and has a slow response considering how feature lacking it is. It also lacks my favourite feature of iTunes, which is the skip when shuffling option. You can’t update just the album cover, you have to update all of the mp3 tag info or none at all. Shuffling only works in some places in the player. The social aspect is definitely the best part of the software and experience. This is something that is seriously lacking from iTunes. The other crappy part is that Canada isn’t getting the full experience from Zune, as the Marketplace isn’t working right now. Apparently it’s coming later this year.

The FM tuner is very awesome. I like that I can keep up with anything that might be going on in the news. If something is happening in the world, I can just turn on the radio and find out the most up to date information if I’m on the go and don’t have access to a computer or TV.

Overall though, I am not impressed and have no intentions of buying the 80 GB version. This is mostly due to the software. Microsoft should know that in order to compete with iTunes, they need to have everything iTunes has and more. iPod Touch here I come! (When the price comes down.) Sorry Microsoft, I really wanted to like your product, but you failed.
