Movie Review Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo BayI loved the first one, and had fairly high expectations for this one.

This one continues with the crazy antics of Harold and Kumar smoking weed, and getting into trouble where you really shouldn’t be getting in trouble. A lot of exaggeration and silliness, but it works with these movies for some reason. I’m not sure why, because the plot is pretty lame.

So overall there were some funny parts in the movie, but it wasn’t as good as the first, that’s for sure.

I did love the Neil Patrick Harris cameo again! He’s really aged a lot, and it shows in this movie. He’s so crazy though haha. It’s too bad he couldn’t have been as crazy back when he was popular. It would have made him more fun. He kind of reminds me of Justin Timberlake for some reason…

So I didn’t buy the first one on DVD, and I won’t be buying this one either.

Movie Review SleepwalkingThis movie is about a woman who abandons her child, and leaves her brother to take care of the young girl. He ends up losing her to Social Services, after he is told he is not able to properly take care of the girl. He ends up kidnapping her from foster care, and they go to his father’s farm house, where they are not treated so well.

It’s a really sad, and cold movie. Cold would be the best word to describe this movie. Harsh would be another. It’s in the prairies during the winter, and everything about the movie just feels so bitterly cold. From the acting, to the lives they live, to the scenes.

You feel so bad for the young girl, but eventually the movie starts to drag, and the plot feels like it’s going nowhere. It became predictable, and in the end, felt like a bit of a letdown.

I had higher hopes for this movie from the trailer, but ultimately it was not that great. I definitely will not be buying this for my DVD collection.

July 27th, 2008Penelope

PenelopeAnother movie review… I’ve been catching up on movies that I’ve been meaning to watch.

This was a really cute movie. Better than I expected actually. It’s not brilliant or anything, but totally worth watching if you like romantic comedies.

The movie is about a girl who was born with a curse. The curse is that she has the nose of a pig. Yes, a snout! So her parents keep her a secret in the house for years, until she is an adult. One day she decides to get out of the house and see the city after many failed matchmakings by her parents.

Christina Ricci plays Penelope, and is really great as usual. Also she makes a friend who is played by Reese Witherspoon; who also produced the movie, but I felt could have had more of a role in the movie.

The ending was nice and didn’t feel rushed, but it did feel like something was missing, although I’m not sure what.

All in all though, I enjoyed it, but I won’t be buying it, it wasn’t that good. Most romantic comedies aren’t though, are they? They’re kind of disposable movies really.

July 25th, 2008The Ruins

The Ruins

After hearing how bad this movie was, and going in watching it with fairly low expectations, I was actually surprised that it wasn’t that bad at all. I’ve seen far worse horror movies in my life. I think the reason people were disappointed is because they were expecting something completely different from what they got. I think what makes so many movies so bad is that people go into them with expectations. It’s best to just let the movie take you where it wants and go with the flow when watching a movie.

It’s actually a pretty disturbing movie really. The characters have to go through many tests of courage and stuff that most people never have to face in their lives. The acting wasn’t that great, but that’s pretty typical of a horror movie. Lots of screaming, which was done pretty well I suppose. The effects were pretty gruesome and gross. A couple of cute guys as well didn’t hurt this one. The ending was sort of weak though. You’d have to watch it to see what I mean.

Overall, it’s best to watch this one with either low or no expectations at all, and just follow the story along. It’s not confusing, but it is a bit hard to watch due to how psychologically messed up it is.

July 18th, 2008Diary of the Dead

Diary Of The DeadI had fairly low expectations of this movie. I find George A. Romero’s movies are pretty crappy. He’s supposed to be the original zombie movie maker, and the best at it. Yet, he consistently makes the worst zombie movies. This was just a continuation of that trend.

First of all it was filmed with hand cameras. Garbage! I hate that shit. Use real cameras, so that you don’t give the viewers headaches and nausea. Second, get people who can actually act. Instead of getting 7 people who can’t act, get 3 who can, and give them more money. That would be a good start.

The best part of the movie is the zombies. The make up artists and effects artists really do a great job for this movie. They do look pretty creepy.

I just hate when big names do low budget!

July 8th, 2008Funny Games

Funny GamesWhen I started watching this I was not 100% sure what to expect. I like watching movies like that, because the fun of watching a movie is not knowing what’s going to happen. I was expecting a family taken hostage by two crazy psychos, and probably one of them or all of them would survive, and the psychos would get caught and you’d have your happy or not-so-happy ending. Fortunately, or unfortunately, that was not how things went! I say this, because I’m not sure if I liked this movie or not.

June 24th, 2008In Bruges

In BrugesThis was a weird movie for a few reasons. The first reason is that it’s an action movie, but yet it has a lot of emotion in it as well. Men crying and shooting in the same movie. The same men crying are shooting, actually. That’s not something you see much of in these types of movies.

The comedy is also really twisted and great. The somewhat subtle hints of anti-Americanism is pretty funny too. Gotta love the British and Europeans really, don’t you?

The characters are all really great. No boring or annoying actors in this one. My only complaint was that the story was a bit drab, and could have used a bit of a pick-me-up at some point, to keep things a little more active.

You really start to feel for the characters in the movie. Well, in particular one named Ray, played by Colin Farrell. He is so damn cute in this movie too. I just love everything about him! From his accent, to his looks, to his dirty mouth and stubbly face.

June 3rd, 2008The Eye

The EyeI was really not impressed with this movie. Basically, Jessica Alba can not act! Watching her is like watching a puddle evaporate on a hot day. She is very boring, and really does not invoke any interest in the character she plays in this movie at all.

She wasn’t the only one in the movie who can’t act. There was really only one other role, which was also very boring. The plot sucked, and wasn’t even scary one bit. They relied solely on graphics to scare you. Although using unnecessarily loud sound effects was another attempt to scare the audience as well. They failed miserably with this movie, and it was a waste of time to even watch it. Even just writing a review of this movie is a waste of time, so I’m going to stop now.

Rental? No way.
Buy it? No way.

April 29th, 2008One Missed Call

One Missed Call There were good things about this movie, and bad things.

The good part is that there was a lot of suspense. The effects and creepiness factor is also pretty high. The bad part is the acting is bad, and there is a lot of things that just don’t really make any sense. Also the cheese factor gets up there at times. Also wasn’t too fond of the ending.

Overall though, I was expecting it to be worse, much worse. From the low score it has on IMDB, to what people were saying about it. I’ve seen far worse movies than this one however.

The acting was okay, but also could have been improved. That hot guy Johnny Lewis, was also in this movie. I mentioned him in the Aliens VS. Predator: Requiem review. He is so hot, but played such a minor role in this movie. The guy who plays the detective in this movie, Edward Burns, is also sexy as hell, and you could tell that Beth, played by Shannyn Sossamon, really wanted to get in his pants. Can’t blame her! I was disappointed that Margaret Cho played such a small role in this movie. I guess it was just a cameo. I don’t think the role they put her in was right for her though.

Rental? Yes.

Purchase? No.

April 16th, 2008Juno

Juno This movie has a bit of everything in it really. Romance, drama, comedy. Lots of heartbreak, funny, and touching moments. I wasn’t going to bother watching this movie, but everyone I was talking to about it had nothing but good things to say about it. That is usually the only time I’ll bother watching something I’ve previously has no interest in.

I was not disappointed with this at all. I think it could have been better, but it was not a huge letdown or anything. The ending was a bit predictable, despite the curve ball that was thrown in not too long before the end.

The father of the baby; Paulie Bleeker, played by Michael Cera, was a bit dull, and I think it would have been better if he had played a bit more of a role in the movie. I’m really not a huge fan of Ellen Page. I think she’s a bit snotty to be honest, and it shows in her acting. She has a very snooty typical Nova Scotian attitude,(she is from there) that a lot of people there seem to have. I’m not sure why so many people who live there are like that, but whatever. I am just not a big fan of hers, I find her acting very fake and trying too hard. I’m saying that from the standpoint of a viewer however, not an actor of any kind, or professional movie critic.

Overall though, this one is definitely worth the watch, but it wasn’t good enough for me to purchase. Definitely worth the rental though!
